Volnay Clos des Ducs 2020 – Marquis d’Angerville

A monopole

Clos des Ducs is one of the most revered monopoles in Burgundy—a vineyard solely owned and farmed by Marquis d’Angerville. Volnay is known for elegance, and Clos des Ducs shows it with noble restraint, even in a rich vintage like 2020.

Tasting note

The 2020 is certainly superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet cherries, plums and berries mingled with spices, orange zest, peony and discreet hints of oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless palate that's bright, elegant and rich but refined. Of the trio, it's probably the 2020 that carries the sunshine and warmth of the vintage the most lightly, even though the year was, on paper, the most extreme. (William Kelley)

Fun fact

The vineyard’s name, “Clos des Ducs,” refers to its historical ownership by the Dukes of Burgundy. Since the French Revolution, it’s been in private hands—and since 1804, with the d’Angerville family.

Score Robert Parker 95+ (not rated by us as all bottles are in mint condition)

A small note on our tasting impressions:

Many of the wines we taste come from bottles that aren’t quite sale-worthy—levels a bit low, labels too distressed, or simply not pretty enough for the spotlight. While we love the character these bottles bring, our notes are not based on a single glass alone. They reflect years of tasting experience—both within our team and from trusted friends in the wine world.

As for the fun facts?

All true (we promise)… though possibly enhanced by the gentle glow of a good glass of wine.
